Conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran has occurred in some form since the 1979 revolution. The wars in Syria and Yemen, with the two backing opposite sides, has pushed tensions higher. The political crisis in Qatar has ratcheted it higher still. The Saudis have spent massive sums of oil money building up their military, and the possibility of a direct cataclysmic battle with their enemy across the Gulf has never been greater.
